Happy Better Breakfast Month!
In the Eaton house, breakfast is not taken lightly. Yes, our coffee addictions may be what get us out of bed in the morning, but eating breakfast is a close second. It’s our favorite and biggest meal of the day where we each take in close to 1000 calories.
There are a lot of people who don’t eat breakfast because they’re “not hungry in the morning”, or “don’t have time.” Honestly, these are bad reasons and you need to change your habits.
By not eating breakfast, you are basically starting your car on empty. Breakfast helps to stabilize your hunger so without it, your hunger strikes at weird times and causes you to crave bad, sugary food later in the day.
Breakfast also kicks starts your metabolism and helps you burn more calories throughout the day. If you don’t eat your first meal until noon, that’s approximately 12 hours you’ve been fasting, 5 of which you’ve been awake for. So when you do finally eat, your body stores it, not knowing when it will eat again. You can see how craving sugary food and having a slow metabolism can be a deadly combination for those wanting to lose weight and get healthier.
Breakfast has a lot of your daily requirements of vitamins and minerals. So if you’re skipping breakfast, where are you making these up?
As athletes, we’ve learned to listen to what our bodies are telling us, and upset stomaches, fatigue, indigestion, bloating, and headaches are all ways of our bodies saying they’re mad. We also get dominated by sugar cravings on bad breakfast days. Sour Patch Watermelon candies…we’re comin' for ya!
To keep our bodies happy and to sustain us through the morning, our breakfasts are focused on protein and fiber. We eat eggs every single day along with some kind of carbohydrate. This could be in the form of sweet potatoes, oatmeal with fiber, nuts and seeds, or toast with almond butter.
Fruit is a natural breakfast food, so that’s simple, but we work hard to fit veggies into our breakfasts. We do this by making an all veggie omelette, throwing chopped spinach into our scrambled eggs, or simply having a handful of cherry tomatoes and a few slices of cucumber alongside our eggs and toast.
So this month we’re challenging you to eat better breakfasts. If you’re not hungry in the morning, force yourself to eat anyways. It may take a while to adjust to this new routine but in the long run, you’ll be much happier.
